JOB SUMMARY:
The incumbent serves as the agency expert advisor and consultant on news media strategies, activities, and responses in the area of disease prevention and control. News media information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention often has a national and international impact on public health strategies for disease prevention and control. The incumbent interacts with the general public and specialized audiences on significant public health issues.

DUTIES:
As a Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist you will: Plan, direct and execute media relations efforts to inform and educate general and specialized public about CDC programs, actions and accomplishments. Plan, develop and implement an overall news media communications plan detailing news media relations activities on a CDC-wide basis, to include on-going media response and outreach activities. Advise senior agency officials, Center communication leaders, press officers and other staff conducting media relations activities throughout the agency on public information and agency programs relating to media communications. Provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of communication to press officers, subject matter experts, principals and other agency officials. Facilitate press conferences, media briefings, media availability and media interviews with agency senior officials and prepares officials on advisable conduct during agency news events. Arranges joint events with collaborating and partner organizations, including national and international health organizations, non-governmental and private sector organizations. Provide consultation to and manages training programs for CDC executive, administrative and scientific staff and others whose responsibilities make them spokespersons for CDC through the media or other channels of communication. Direct and manage all aspects of the News Media Branch (NMB) commonly referred to as the "CDC Press Office." Serve as immediate supervisor to public affairs specialists. Assigns work, and review and evaluate completed work.

REQUIREMENTS:

A supervisory probationary period may be required. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in public affairs principles and methods used in leading/managing a media relations program in an organization, and conceptualizing, planning, and executing communication strategies; applying proven emergency and risk communication approaches to crisis situations such as health and safety threats, and directing and assessing work of subordinates. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
