DUTIES:
As a Microbiologist (Inspector), you will:
  • Conduct on-site inspections that include Biosafety Level (BSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, and Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, facilities.
  • Prepare written compliance reports of inspection findings based upon regulatory requirements by using nationally recognized safety standards as a reference.
  • Facilitate the registration of entities that possess, use and/or transfer select agents and toxins.
  • Review applications from entities required to register to determine whether all requirements for registration and updates to the registration (amendments) have been met.
  • Coordinate registration activities with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, when indicated.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Qualification Requirements for Microbiologist (Inspector), GS-0403-13:

A. Applicants must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent; OR

B. Applicants must have a combination of experience and education -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education; AND

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience conducting evaluations and inspections for biological high containment laboratories, identifying biosafety and biosecurity issues using nationally recognized biosafety standards, such as Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and developing guidance and procedures to improve biosafety and biosecurity in domestic laboratories.
